main bathroom reveal.

The bathroom is finally 100% done.

When we moved into the house (nearly 5 years ago). All of the bathrooms had "sweet" honey oak cabinets and laminate counter tops...and those awesome mirrors glued directly to the wall (you know, the ones all houses have). The toilet was little and the floor was the same tile that went through a lot of the main living area. The toilet was changed out immediately:)

About 2 years ago, we decided to update the bathrooms by putting in new vanities and countertops...and to replace the mirrors with framed ones. We put in a new bar light strip (don't judge, I just can't really see spending any money on the "fancier" looking ones...for a bathroom).

So this is what the bathroom has looked like for the past couple years.

So much better then the honey oak.

When we started "Thompson remodel 2010" the tile in the bathroom had to go too. So Mr. T had to pull out his toilet and vanity. I said, while you are at it...and while I am painting every other thing in our home...go ahead and pull out the mirror etc and let's do this baby right.

What we did:

painted the ceiling

painted the door and pocket door to the laundry room

changed the towel hook

spray painted the pocket door latch

changed out the door knob from awesome brass to satin nickel

painted the moldings around the door

put in new baseboards

put in new flooring

painted the walls...with stripes

Guest bedroom decor...complete...(post 2)

Today was another productive day in the guest room.

I saw some pillow shams with black trim somewhere and decided they would be perfect for the guest bed.

Found myself some white shams at Walmart for $7 a piece.

picked up some "heatnbond" (I've never used it before) and some black grosgrain ribbon...

cut the ribbon to the length I wanted...burned the edges...

(yes, it's a heart candle...only candle with access to a wick...watcha gonna do:)

iron on heat n bond...

iron onto shams...add pillows...place on bed:)

(they are kinda wimpy edges so the don't stand up well...but you see the black so you get the idea)

....still need a few more pillows for this bed...

then I made myself a curtain.

I love my new curtain...

I just love this fabric...saw it at Joanns...waited till it was 50% off...got myself an additional 10% off coupon and bought enough to make myself a curtain (and a roman shade) for the guest room...

I pretty much just hemmed all four sides and attached it to the rod.

It's the lovely craft closet...

(I even cleaned off the table for you...)

Guest bedroom decor...complete...(post 1)

The decor and makeover for the guest bedroom went from fairly simple to a little more time intensive. I decided (for my sake) to put all the stuff in one place...bear with me...it's a LONG post.

Project 1:

Turn this old lamp...(my husband has had for YEARS)

don't say it...I know...it totally looks like a fire hydrant...I'm over it:)

and cover the shade...

Jewelry holder

I looked and looked and looked on craig's list and at thrift stores (okay for like a week) for a scrolly framed something to make this with...but I ended up going with ikea's...

bought some of this because it was mesh and seemed sturdy enough to hold my necklaces.

(used a 40% off coupon at Joanns...it was one of those days).

hot glued it to the back (after removing the glass, cardboard, etc)

didn't really want to see the wall through it...so I added the remainder of this fabric...

(I hope it isn't over kill?:)

added ALL my etsy necklaces...

(I used 16 gauge black wire to make s hooks)

wanna buy one so this thing isn't so full?:)

Ikea frame: $24.99

mesh material: $4 (only used 1/4 of it)

fabric: (3rd project it was used for)

black wire: $2.00

total cost: $31

Wall Art

(I saw these at Frugal Home Ideas and HAD to make them...

kind of the kick off point for this room)

3 canvases (purchased almost a year ago at 50% off)

painted black...added some tape for a 2 inch border

add mat

some spray paint

deal with overspray (dang it)

touch up (A LOT) by hand

...and hang...

canvas: I'm callin' 'em free since I have had them so long

black paint: used the furniture paint

white paint: can of Heirloom white I had

mat: $5.99 from Ross

Total cost: $5.99

(if you must count the canvases...I think on sale they were $10 a piece)

I am really happy with how it all turned out. I still have to sew the curtains for the craft closet and make a roman shade and makeover the chair and sew a few pillows for the bed

A big white 690 square foot room...

What to do?

background info on this oversized room...

My mother has lived in the same house for 21 1/2 years...we moved in on my 11th birthday (it's okay...I'm not still bitter:) When we moved in the "rec room" was covered in wall paper. One wall even had a full bar scene...I'm talking table with drinkers and everything...not so appropriate for a family with 7 kids. Down came all the wall paper and up went the "creamy white" paint. And the floors...well...did you read the 7 kid part...blue "indoor/outdoor" carpet (or if you are LDS...blue church building carpet...seriously) that was glued directly to the floor...awesome! Oh...and one of the corners was turned into a bedroom...so it became a 690 square foot room minus a small bedroom.

Flash forward to 2010...for the first time...my mother and step-father are empty nesters...all the kids and grandkids have finally moved out and they are all alone is this large home. My older sister and I decided that during my trip home it was time to start the makeover:

a note on the furniture...this room has seen more couches then one could count...whatever was trashed down stairs was moved up here...

When my youngest brother finally moved out in the fall, my mom had him carry out all the big furniture (couch, bookcases, etc) and the room was left looking like this...

(no...this is not a gym:) and all the sweet plastic and metal chairs were brought in from the garage over Christmas when the whole fam wanted to play the Wii.

try not to be jealous!

Okay...this room has a LONG way to go...so let's get started!

Step one: PAINT

We primed and painted every square inch of the walls and ceilings...ugh!

it wasn't just fun, but scary as well...

I DID NOT look down...my tummy hurt!

a few notes:

I can't believe I am putting up a butt shot.

These are NOT my paint pants...I blame my mom for these sweet pink pants.

yes, I am laughing hysterically so I don't cry as I hit my head on the ceiling trying to cut in that last spot...

There is nothing better then a fresh coat of paint. I wish you could fully appreciate how shocking color on these walls is to all of us kids...it's crazy...

We wanted to add a little fun to this room...warm it up and make it a "family room"

We painted the 30 foot wall with a flat sheen

added some tape...

Painted it down (directions found here)

painted a semi-gloss sheen on every other stripe...

and pulled off the tape (immediately)

ohhhh...we LOVE it!

What else will we be doing to this room?

-taking down those sweet lights and putting in can lighting

-ripping out those awesome baseboards for some taller ones

-new blinds and window treatments

-new carpet

-the brown doors will be painted white

-new couch (or A couch if you consider there currently isn't one)

-new tv stand (purchased but needs to be set up)

-some bookcases to separate the tiny area from the larger

-a great big wall of family photos, etc on the striped wall with a vinyl saying of course.

Of course, my mom being a good budgeter and all...most of this will slowly be happening over the next year or so. But that is just fine with me. The biggest task...painting...is done...and we can get a few more minor things done before I leave at the end of the week. I did tell my mom that I would like SOME progress done before my next trip up here in the fall.

I'm hoping to continue to update with pictures over the next few months...I'm crossing my fingers, but not holding my breath...or maybe there will be nothing until I'm back in November:) You never can know for sure!
