Do you see the problems? (no, not the filthy glass...don't judge)...I'm talking about that sweet goldy brassy whatever ugliness going on...
yep...that is some early 90s sweetness...
I saw the perfect solution here and I knew I had to give it a try.
After A LOT of scrubbing and taping and papering I was ready to spray. In all of my scrubbing I realized that the whole thing could use a paint job...lots of scratches, etc.
(I used rust-oleum high heat spray paint in satin black).
All black baby....a thing of beauty!
Let me tell you what I LOVE about my fireplace:
1. instead of my eye immediately going to the gold strips...it goes to the white mantel and surround.
2. instead of me detesting the black tile...I barely notice it...it's just all black
3. my husband was so thoroughly impressed and kept saying, "it looks so great...it looks brand new".
4. Even Lil D said, "mom did good job on fire"...thanks!
5. because I decided to paint...I cleaned...yep, I love a clean fireplace!
and 6....I might actually be able to live with the black with white speck tile for another 4 years:) Okay...not that long, but long enough to spend my time and money on other more pressing projects!
Kind of crazy what a $6 can of spray paint can do...I know, I know...you all already know this...I'm just finally picking up what you are putting down!

Don't you love the difference even a LITTLE bit of paint makes! I had the same problem in my previous home and did the same thing. Cannot TELL you how happy it made me. :-) Hope you're having a good week...

Wow! It looks brand new. I'm impressed. Don't ya just love spray paint?
Much better. I love your ghosts ideas on your blog and just featured three of them on somedaycrafts.blogspot.com Grab my "featured" button.
Ok so at my house I bought 3 cans of brown paint and 2 cans of silver and I updated 3 fans which went from mid 80's to totally modern, 2 picture frames, a mirror, pumpkins (lol), a couple of other gold things (forgot what there called) and let's not forget my house #'s. The can's were on sale for 3.50 so it was a steal. I still have some left and wonder what I should use them on!!!! lOve you Teri....it looks great!
I did the exact same thing! I just love the way paint can make a huge difference. Your fireplace looks awesome! Great job!

OMG. I should send you a picture of my fireplace ... I don't have brass STRIPS ... I have an entire brass INSERT. It is truly heinous. I have just written down the paint you used on a Post-it Note and plan to buy it TONIGHT. Thanks for the inspiration!
Good for you!! It does look brand new!! Way to go and thanks for linking up!

Looks great girlie! The taping off is the worst part, eh? That's always how it goes with painting...it's the prep and clean up that stinks. :o)
peace!

It looks great! Sometime something simple can have a big impact.
Oh that looks so much better! Don't blame you for wanting to get rid of the gold and look what a difference that made! Thanks so much for linking up with us! ~ Ashley
